Paul van Zelm studied horn and natural horn with Adriaan van Woudenberg in Amsterdam and with Hermann Baumann in Essen, Germany. Even before he finished his studies, he played in several orchestras under conductors such as Eugen Jochum, Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein. His first engagement was with the WDR Symphoy Orchestra. In 1993, he became first solo horn with the Düsseldorf Symphonic. In 1994 he was appointed first solo horn with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. In 2007, he returned to the WDR Symphony Orchestra, where he is now principal horn.
Paul van Zelm was a long-time member of the Amsterdam Bach Soloists and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. He appeared as a soloist with some of the leading Dutch symphony orchestras as well as the WDR Symphony Orchestra. He is often invited to play in other European countries and in the U.S.A., South America and Japan.
In 1999, Paul van Zelm was appointed Professor at the Musikhochschule in Cologne.
