Michael von Schönermark was born in Berlin. At the age of 12 he attended „Musikgymnasium Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach“ in Berlin where he received bassoon lessons from Prof. Fritz Finsch as a Young Student at the „Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin“. From 2000 to 2004 he studied under Prof. Klaus Thunemann.
In January 2004, at the age of 22, Michael von Schönermark was appointed Principal Bassoonist of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Since August 2015 he has been Principal Bassoonist of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. In 2017 he was appointed lecturer for bassoon as main subject at the Hochschule Luzern. Michael is also a member of the Quadriga Bassoon Ensemble.
At the „Internationaler Musikwettbewerb der ARD München“ in 2002, Michael von Schönermark was awarded the Theodor Rogler Foundation Special Award. In 2003 he won the „Schleswig-Holstein-Musikfestivals“ advancement prize.
From 2000 until 2004 he held the scholarship „Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes“, and from 2003 until 2006 the „Villa Musica“ Foundation scholarship. At the music competition „Deutscher Musikwettbewerb für Solisten“ 2003 in Berlin, he was given a scholarship by the German Music Council within the framework „Bundesauswahl Konzerte junger Künstler“.
As soloist Michael von Schönermark has appeared with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Münchener Kammerochester, the Konzerthaus Kammerorchester and the Thüringer Sinfoniker. As chamber musician he regularly participates at festivals like the Schwetzinger Festspielen, the Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival, the Davos Festival, the MDR Musiksommer.
His recording of the bassoon concerto by Andrzej Panufnik with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin conducted by Lukasz Borowicz (released in 2013) was awarded the ICMA Special Achievement Award in 2015.
